Using Grab in Chiang Mai
Grab is by far the easiest way to get around Chiang Mai and it’s very budget friendly. The service does far more than just get you from point A to point B. It also offers motorbike service, food take-out delivery, and even grocery delivery. You can even rent a car or motorbike though the service as well.
As a user, you should be aware that ride apps have been deemed illegal services by the Department of Land Transport as of June 2017. But get this! This decree doesn’t necessarily mean the services no longer exist. This is Thailand (TIT) after all. How things operate here will constantly have you shaking your head!
The Grab app will still work. Grab drivers will still pick you up and drop you off as if nothing is out of the ordinary. For a detailed look at how to use Grab, check out chiangmaitraveller.Â
Is it safe to take Grab?
Grab drivers are held accountable through you, the passenger, and the app. Thai people are generally kind, honest people and are eager to please. These ride share apps have provided many with a new lease on life and extra income, so they are less likely to abuse the privilege. There have not been any reports (that we’re aware of) of misconduct of drivers in Chiang Mai, but use your discretion if you feel unsafe.
Compared to Uber, Grab has strict safety policies in place. Their GrabTaxi, GrabCar and GrabExpress drivers are given background checks and extensive training. According to Grab’s website, they are certified in First Aid, CPR, and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) skills. Something to keep in mind when travelling with the young and elderly!
How much does it cost to take a Grab in Chiang Mai?
Grab is fairly affordable, but there are cheaper options below to check out! Grab does remain more affordable than other taxis. For instance, I recently took a songtaew about a quarter of the way around the moat and it cost 60 baht for two people. That’s really expensive when a Grab would’ve cost half that or less. In another example, a taxi from the airport to my home usually costs between 300-400 baht, but a Grab would be about 150 baht.
Grab is cheap. It will fit your family budget!

Using Bolt in Chiang Mai
How much does it cost to use Bolt?
Bolt rideshare app is fairly new on the scene. It operates just like Grab in every way except rides are much cheaper! For example, trying to book from my home to the airport during rush hour with Grab was 292 baht. With Bolt, it’s only 94 baht!!!
Bolt is THE most affordable rideshare app in Chiang Mai by far.
Using InDriver in Chiang Mai
How much does it cost to use InDriver?
InDriver rideshare app operates slightly differently from Bolt and Grab. With InDriver, YOU offer the price you want to pay!
A suggested rate is offered to you and you can under bid that price. The app will tell you if you’re offer has been accepted or not, and you bid again.
When compared to Grab and Bolt for the same ride, InDriver’s rate to the Chiang Mai airport was 141 baht. So, not as cheap as Bolt, but a nice alternative if Bolt drivers are unavailable.
