Take a trip to Japan, but in Thailand at Nekoemon Cafe Chiang Mai!
This lovely restaurant has an incredibly beautiful and large garden area designed to look as if you are in Japan. Nekoemon Cafe Chiang Mai also serves up sushi and seafood in a gorgeous setting. There is space for kids to run around and many features to enjoy.

A family friendly sushi restaurant in Chiang Mai
Tucked away down back roads off of the super highway, Nekoemon Cafe is a beautiful place for lunch, a drink, or dinner. The entrance itself is stunning. You’ll walk through a bamboo forest with plenty of opportunity for photos. It’s like being in a different place! We’ve never been to Japan, so we can’t claim ‘it’s just like being in Japan,’ but maybe it’s close to it!
The Japanese style gardens are gorgeous and the iconic red bridge is the perfect spot for more photos! The kids will love running over it again and again to visit the waterfall.
Seating
Nekoemon has indoor air conditioned seating but with kids you’re honestly better off sitting outside so you can walk around with the kids or watch them play around.
There is a large covered seating area and a nice garden setting seating area. There are also misters set up around to help keep you cool and the umbrellas help protect from the sun. Here there is also a pretty good view of the garden area.
Play area
While there is no playground, Nekoemon has a huge grassy area for kids to run around on. The pathways actually lead quite aways back, so you’d need to set boundary limits so you can always see the kids. A creek also happens to run through Nekoemon which you’ll want to be mindful of with toddlers.
At the very back of the garden is a cool little area which looks like it may be used for private parties. Here there is a watermill to examine which is kind of random and cool! There are also bathrooms back here just in case as it’s a bit of a walk back to the restaurant.
When is the best time to go to Nekoemon Cafe?
Due to the heat of the day and the likelihood that you’ll be walking around the garden a lot, mornings or late afternoon would be the best times. Just keep in mind that Nekoemon Cafe does get busy late afternoon and early evening as it is a popular sushi spot for dinner.
We ended up staying a couple hours here and went in late morning. It was just getting busy for lunch when we left.
What kind of food do they have at Nekoemon Cafe?
Food
Nekoemon Cafe serves up high quality sushi, or at least that’s what their prices imply. Their sushi does not come cheap! They also serve other items such as sandwiches and pastas and desserts. I can’t necessarily say the food here is kid friendly, however it’s a winner if your child loves sushi and seafood!
Drink
Here you will find coffees, teas, Soju, sodas, smoothies and more. I honestly recommend skipping food and ordering a drink or two (they are at the highest end for price that I have ever seen in Chiang Mai) and call it a day. Think of it as entrance fees to the garden.
How to get to Nekoemon Cafe?
With Nekoemon Cafe being outside of town a bit, Grab is still a good bet to take you there if you don’t have your own transportation. Of course you could also take a taxi as well. To get here by yourself, drive to the super highway and drive south. There is still a lot of construction going on so it’s really best to have GPS open to follow as the turn off may no longer be marked. Once on the correct road, there are lots os well-marked signs to follow to Nekoemon. Parking is available in the restaurants parking lot.
