Get around Chiang Mai on foot and see the citty from a totally different perspective
Most people don’t get to enjoy the beauty of walking around Chiang Mai as they prefer to motorbike, Grab, or tuk tuk around. Chiang Mai’s old city is absolutely incredible and full of hidden treasures. Luckily for you, if you choose to walk, you will be able to fit down that impossibly small sois (alleyways), and discover amazing hangouts or coffee shops where you least expect them.

Is it safe to walk around Chiang Mai?
It’s an adventure walking through the city. You will notice it wasn’t exactly designed for pedestrians and can be a bit unpredictable if you aren’t prepared, so here we go! The sidewalks (if there are any) are uneven, full of random holes and are sometimes as narrow as a balance beam. Be sure to watch out for wires that are all too often just lying around or hanging from above. You don’t want to trip! Also most motorists don’t look before they go. Pedestrians have NO respect around here so you need to be on your toes at all times – eyes and ears open.
Taking a stroller into the city is a non-starter. Don’t even think about it. It’s not worth the hassle! Definitely use a baby carrier for infants or a toddler carrier for tots who can walk but get tired easily.
Another thing to watch out for are dogs. Often referred to as soi dogs, these pups appear to not have homes as they roam the streets freely. More often then not they are completely harmless, but always use caution around them. It’s probably best to keep little ones away from them unless you see other people or children already playing with the dog. Some are adorable and many tourist have been known to take one or two home. Be careful, as someone in your family may fall in love with one!
Take a walking tour around the old city Chiang Mai
Where should you go for a stroll? Should you take a guided tour or go it alone? It depends on how much freedom you want and how much information you’d like.
Guided tours will come with an English or Chinese speaking tour guide how will explain the whereabouts and the history to your surroundings. These are great if you’ve only got a specific amount of time and want to see the more popular spots.
A self-guided tour allows for much more flexibility, but a lack of information. We recommend doing a bit of both!
