What’s it like cycling around Chiang Mai?
Riding a bicycle through Chiang Mai, especially the old city, is a fantastic way to get around.
With the impossibly tiny streets called ‘sois,’ cycling or walking is truly the best way to explore Chiang Mai. It’s easy to get lost in the maze within the moat, but isn’t that the best way to find hidden gems?!
We do however only recommend cycling for families with older children or teenagers who can already ride a bicycle confidently. With the streets being so busy or narrow, it can be a challenge to share the road.
Also, it’s nearly impossible to find child sized bicycles for rent anywhere! In addition, most bikes do not come with infant seats, and we certainly would not recommend the use of a child bike trailer within the moat. Drivers are just not used to dealing with them and might not expect them.
Once you get a feel for cycling downtown (remember the moat is one way, but the sois are both ways and drivers drive on the left side) it will be a breeze and you won’t have to worry about finding a place to park.
Cycling or bicycle tours around Chiang Mai
This is honestly a fabulous option to get out and see the sites, especially the picturesque countryside. Taking a biking tour is also a great way to see Thai culture outside of the city walls! Here are a few tours to check out 🙂
Where to rent a bicycle in Chiang Mai
Getting around by bicycle is a very popular choice. Nearly every guesthouse will have some available at a daily rate. Alternatively, just taking a walk will lead to plenty of rental shops. There will be a couple kinds of bicycles available to hire. Mountain bikes are popular, but in the city you are better off with a road bike. Those are the pretty fashionable ones that usually have a basket. Definitely plan on getting a basket bike if you are going to do some shopping or don’t want to get a sweaty back from wearing your bag.
The majority of bicycles for rent are adult size. It would pay to inquire with your guesthouse or hotel where to rent a kid’s bike. If you find a place, please let us know!
How much does renting a bicycle cost in Chiang Mai?
Renting a bike should cost between 60 baht to 100 baht for the day.
