Do People Celebrate Halloween In Chiang Mai?
Yes! The local people love any chance to dress up, and you can expect to be impressed. A lot of effort goes into their make-up and costumes. To win first place at a costume competition is quite a challenge.
When is Halloween celebrated in Chiang Mai?
This year Halloween falls on a Thursday so you can expect events to take place on October 31st. There will also be parties the weekend before with a few carrying over into Friday and Saturday. Halloween events happen all over Chiang Mai.
Do Schools Celebrate Halloween In Chiang Mai?
Most do! Those that donโt will usually hold a costume day in place of Halloween. It will be called something else, but the idea behind dressing up is the same.
Youโll want to check with your childโs school to see if they will be celebrating this year. Itโs lots of fun for all, with schools holding competitions, events, trick or treating, or costume parades. Teachers and parents are sometimes encouraged to get dressed up too ๐
This leads to your question of: where can I get Halloween costumes and decorations in Chiang Mai?
Where To Buy Halloween Costumes In Chiang Mai
There are plenty of options to purchase costumes in Chiang Mai. Prices range from about 300 baht and up depending on where you shop.
Every year I usually leave buying a Halloween costume to the last minute and have never had an issue getting one even the night before, but this is only possible if you are relaxed about choices.
If you plan to order online and have a costume delivered in Chiang Mai, then make sure to order at least a week in advance, maybe more.
Here are the known and recommended costume shops in Chiang Mai:
Please click on the link to find out each storeโs location.
Mae Hia Market shops
Mae Hia Market offers many costume choices. There are at least 4 costume shops perfect for children, with the one around the back entrance having adult Halloween costumes as well!
Daiso
Daiso, which is located at Kad Farang Mall, Central Festival Mall, Maya and Central Airport Mall, offers affordable costume options and cheap accessories too! Prices start at 60 baht.
Pao Pao
Pao Pao (เนเธเธง เนเธเธง) is a wholesale shop located on Hang Dong Road heading south from Central Airport Mall. Once you shop here, youโll never want to shop anywhere else. The store itself seems to go on forever and youโll find surprises down every isle and prices that make you happy! The Halloween costumes will be found to the right end past the cash registers.
Mr DIY
Mr DIY will have all sorts of wonderful accessories and costumes in Chiang Mai! Best of all, it will be very affordable. Just walking around Mr DIY will give your imagination a run for its money. What Halloween costume will you come up with?! I bet it will be fantastic. Mr DIY is located at various locations around the city but the best one is in Lotus’s Hang dong.
Mall department stores
Of course, the mall department stores are another great place to get costumes in Chiang Mai. Thereโs Central World, Central, and Robinsonโs to check out.
Maya Mall
At Maya Mall, youโll want to visit Viva Loco, a funky store that has some pretty cool stuff. Theyโre bound to have really cool dress up accessories and clothing.
Warorot Market
Warorot Market in China Town is another great option to buy costumes in Chiang Mai, especially if youโre into making your own Halloween costume or having one made. You can find loads of fabrics and cheap Halloween accessories here. There will also be lots of typical Halloween costumes options like witch, vampire, skeleton costumes available.
Chiang Mai Fancy
Chiang Mai Fancy is a costume store located in Star Avenue 5. They have costumes for all occasions available for purchase or for rent. Expect these to be on the higher end of quality and price, but totally worth it if youโre dressing to impress!
Kad Farang Wednesday Market
Every Wednesday is a great market at Kad Farang in Hang Dong. One of the children’s clothes stalls turns into a Halloween costume shop for a month leading up to Halloween.
The Best Places To Buy Halloween Costumes Online
Lazada
Most everyone will recommend Lazada.co.th. They have a great selection of costumes that range from affordable to insanely priced. Their delivery service is very reliable (as long as they can find your house), and offer easy purchase options, return or exchanges.
Shopee
Shopee.co.th is another growing in popularity option. They are known for brand name items rather than anything made in any factory in China, so you can expect better quality, but higher prices.
Shein
Shein.com is a great and affordable option for finding Halloween costumes online. Delivery is also really quick!
Where To Rent Costumes In Chiang Mai
Fancy Dress
Fancy Dressย near Airport Home Condo in Mae Hia, area has all sorts of costumes. They have costumes in adult sizes! We have rented from here a few times and have found great quality items. It is kind of expensive though. Rentals last for 3 days and start at 300 baht, however this is a sustainable option both for your wallet and the environment. While you might spend 300 baht on a costume you can keep, what are the chances youโll ever wear it again?
Chiang Mai Fancy
Another place to rent costumes is Chiang Mai Fancy in Hang Dong. They also charge what seems like a lot to rent costumes, but renting prevents energy resources being used to make new ones every year.
Where To Buy Halloween Decorations In Chiang Mai
Daiso
Daiso will have decorations that start at 60 baht. Their collection is usually pretty good, but seems to differ depending on which location you go to. Daiso in Chiang Mai is located at Kad Farang Mall, Central Festival Mall, Maya and Central Airport Mall, offers affordable costume options and cheap accessories!
Pao Pao
Again, I canโt recommend Pao Pao (เนเธเธง เนเธเธง) enough! You need to be aware that theysell accessories and decorations in bulk, so be prepared to buy many of one thing. Pao Pao is a great store to buy party decorations and party favours.
Mr DIY
Mr DIY will have Halloween decorations at very affordable prices in Chiang Mai. You can find various locations popping up all over Chiang Mai.
Warorot Market
Closer to the old city of Chiang Mai, is Warorot Market in China Town. Head down here during the day to get our hands on all the usual Halloween decorations for fair prices! You can usually bargain too if you buy a lot.
Big C
For some reason BigC Supercentres are discounted as a great place to buy decorations. However, they will usually have a designated area set up with Halloween themed items to purchase.
Department stores
Mall department stores are another good place to shop for Halloween decorations in Chiang Mai. Have a look at Central World, Central, and Robinsonโs in the malls.
Where To Buy Halloween Candy In Chiang Mai
Pretty well every store sells candy, but the best places in Chiang Mai for Halloween packs of candy are Macro or Rimping Supermarkets.
Can You Carve Pumpkins In Chiang Mai?
Where can you buy a pumpkin to carve in Chiang Mai? Well, over the years we have begun to see pumpkins for sale around Halloween. Youโll have to head out to local food markets to see if you can find any.
If not, we have the perfect alternative โ watermelon carving! Itโs SO much easier than pumpkin carving and you can make delicious (I mean creepy) smoothies with the insides of the watermelon. Here a video of how to carve a Halloween watermelon!
Where To Go Trick Or Treating In Chiang Mai
ย These events are for the most part, well-kept secrets. Why? Well, you wouldnโt want dozens or potentially hundreds, of strangers showing up to your house would you?!
A select few moo baans (housing communities) host trick or treating such as Home in Park and Lanna Thara, but itโs never a guarantee the same moo baan will host again every year. Itโs best to ask around!
The Flow Village has opened its doors this year however you must register to attend.
