You can celebrate in style at a fancy hotel, or dance the night away at a local bar. You can even celebrate New Years in Chiang Mai in the old city and possibly see the night sky light up with fireworks!
Whatever you decide to do, know that this is a particularly busy time of year. Reservations and deposits are highly recommended for any New Years event in Chiang Mai. You should also plan to book your hotel well in advance.
Where are the best places to celebrate New Years in Chiang Mai?
Tae Phae Gate
Tae Phae Gate is traditionally the place to go to celebrate New Years in Chiang Mai. There will be live performances, live music, lots of food stalls, fireworks and a countdown.
Traffic around Tae Pae Gate is usually blocked from about 5:30 pm making the streets very safe for children to walk around. Just be wary of the crowds as there will be lots of people – this is the most popular place in Chiang Mai for New Years!
Nawarat Bridge or Charoen Bridge areas
The many restaurants that line the Ping River will be hosting celebrations as well. It is far less busy out this way and you will have a better view of the fireworks here as the city usually set them off near the river. If you decide to eat at one of the restaurants along the river, make sure to book ahead! It will be a very popular destination for dinner on New Year’s Eve.ย
Alternatively you could eat somewhere nearby and walk over to the bridge closer to midnight and enjoy the fireworks show. Out this way, it will be far less crowded with people, but the streets will not be closed to traffic.

Let’s be honest, New Years is exhausting! Many a year the kids struggle to stay awake, and we do too! If you happen to be high up or lucky to be in the right spot, it might be possible to watch from your hotel window, but no promises!
