Find out what to see and what to do on Chinese New Year 2025 in Chiang Mai
This year January 29th is Chinese New Year.
Find events and activities for kids going on for Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai. Will there be dragons? Will there be lanterns or a parade? What will your fortune hold for the year ahead?
Chiang Mai has a huge Chinese population and Chinese heritage. Prior to Covid travel restrictions, Chiang Mai was one of the top tourist destinations for Chinese tourists. Over the years, the city has expanded its Chinese New Year celebrations outside of China Town.
You can find more events happening around the city, and with a large number of Chinese restaurants, there will be many opportunities to try authentic Chinese food as well.
Traditionally in China, Chinese New Year lasts for 2 weeks. In Chiang Mai, there are major events that last for about 3 days, with special dinners continuing for the 2 week duration. Many local families celebrate at home and some celebrations occur at local schools as well.
Celebrate Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai, 2025
2025 is the year of the dragon! Curious to find out what animal you are? I bet the kids would love to know if they are a dog, a dragon or even a monkey!
When is Chinese New Year in 2025?
January 29th, 2025 is New Year’s Eve and traditional New Year celebrations run for an incredible 14 days. Chiang Mai usually celebrates for 3 days and this year there are events planned for January 28th to 30th, 2025.
Where is the best place to celebrate Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai, 2025?
The most popular destination for families to celebrate Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai is in China Town! Chiang Mai’s China Town is referred to as Warorot Market. Also known as Kad Luang, it’s located about a 10 minute walk from Tha Phae Gate, east along Thapae Rd, then north along Chang Moi Tud Mai Rd, then east towards the entrance gate to China Town along Chang Moi Rd.
Schedule of events for New Years in China Town, Chiang Mai
>> January 28th
6 pm – Stage performances
7 pm onward – Annual beauty contest
>> January 29th
7:30-9 am – Opening ceremony and parade
9:30 am – Dragon dance
7-10 pm – Stage performance, dragon show, fashion show
>> January 30th
4-6 pm – Traditional Chinese cooking show and competition
7-10 pm – Stage shows
We recommend enjoying the festivities in two parts. First, get up early to enjoy the Chinese New Year parade, then spend the rest of the day relaxing by a pool, or going on a family-friendly adventure, before returning to China Town in the late afternoon or evening. When the sun goes down, that’s when the beauty and fun really begin!
How to get to Warorot Market aka China Town Chiang Mai?
Warorot Market is located to the east of the old city. There will definitely not be any car parking around the immediate area, so we suggest taking a songtaew, tuk tuk, motorbikes, or walking. Going on foot is your best bet as it’s only 10 minutes walk from Tha Phae Gate.
You may also consider driving, but parking your car somewhere nearby and then walk over. There is likely to be motorbike parking, although still expect a bit of a walk from your bike to the celebration!
Road closures for Chinese New Year in Chiang Mai
This year, the center stage will be set at the Chinese arch facing the Ping River. Initially, traffic will be blocked in 3 routes on January 28, 2025 from 7:00 PM until January 30th, 2025 at 12:00 AM as follows.
1. Chang Moi Road, from the Chinese gate to the Warorot Market intersection.
2. Wichayanon Rd. From the intersection behind the market to in front of Thanachart Bank.
3. Khuang Meru Rd./Lao Zhou Alley to Chiang Mai Jaidee Restaurant, Chang Moi Rd.
Other best places to see Chinese New Year celebrations in Chiang Mai are…
Maya Mall! In previous years they put on a show just out front of the mall’s entrance for 3 nights. There was traditional singing, dancing, and even an acrobatics show! This was not advertised widely and has not been advertised this year either. So, if you are in the area, keep an ear out – you just might get to enjoy some incredible entertainment!
