1. Explore a National Park
Ob Khan National Park is located only about 40 minutes from the city. It’s a favourite escape among locals and expats because it’s the perfect way to spend the day with family in Chiang Mai! During the cool season water levels are low and calm making it perfect for swimming in the river. You can also plan a picnic and bring it to the park!
2. Go To The Siam Insect Zoo
Ever wanted to feed an iguana? Hold a bearded lizard or even a stick bug? Then the Siam Insect Zoo is for you! Just north of Chiang Mai, you’ll be able to learn about some incredible insects. The staff all speak English, Chinese, or Thai and are very knowledgeable about every species there – and there’s about 400 creatures there! Your family will even get a private tour.
3. Relax At A Hot Spring
There’s something charming about the San Kampaeng Hot Spring. Another popular family destination near Chiang Mai, you’ll easily spend most of the day here. The kids can play in the playground, everyone can swim in the mineral pool, and soak their feet in the therapeutic waters. One of the highlights is cooking your own snack in the pools near the geysers!
4. Visit A Lesser Known Temple In Chiang Mai
Most of the temples in Chiang Mai are very touristy and have lost some of their realness. Instead, head south of the city to Wat Baan Tha Mai (wat-ban-ta-my) to experience fun. That’s right, fun at a temple! Make sure you are still dressed appropriately – no shoulders or knees showing – and explore this beautiful temple. Split into two parts, there’s plenty to see and do.
5. Climb Up A Waterfall
That’s right! You and the kids can climb up this waterfall! It’s nicknamed sticky waterfall because your feet will stick to the rocks like Velcro. Enjoy the day here with a picnic and make sure to bring a swimsuit or an extra change of clothes for everyone. Entrance is completely free!
6. Visit A Playground In Chiang Mai
Spend some time in the beautiful outdoors at these fabulous outdoor playgrounds. Scattered all over the city, you’ll have a hard time visiting them all, but the kids will be sure to love the ones you do visit. 7. Explore A Botanical Garden
Head up into the mountainous jungle in Mae Rim to experience the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden. Drive and park your car along the way as you see all the attractions within this garden. Go on a family adventure on the canopy walkway high above the trees, take a hike through beautifully landscaped nature, and explore the incredible greenhouses. Be sure to check out the Natural Science Museum while you’re there too!
8. Eat And Play
After a busy day, or a long morning with the kids, you’re either going to be starving or just really want to get the kids out of the house. 9. Visit The Grand Canyon
No, not that one silly! Chiang Mai has a canyon of its very own. An old rock quarry has been converted into two large sections each hosting a different experience for your family. The Grand Canyon Chiang Mai is a great place to go and swim and relax on a small beach.
The other, is called the Grand Canyon Water Park and is sure to entertain those adventurous water lovers in your family.
10. Play In A Public Park
If you’re looking for something completely free to do with the family, visit one of Chiang Mai’s public parks. Here the kids can ride their bicycles, run around, play ball, or play on a playground. Mom and dad can even enjoy a little outdoor workout on the exercise machines and if you’re prepared, have a family picnic!
